Yesterday I said that every believer carries the same commission I do: to stretch the rod of His Word over whatever geography the Lord assigns, because dominion was never meant to stop with one man standing on a mountain. Today I want to go deeper into what that rod is, where it comes from, and to whom it is given, because the Lord is not raising up a single rod-bearer standing alone on a hill somewhere. He is raising up a tribe, a whole governing company carrying the authority of His mouth. I want to show you this from two places in Scripture: the Spirit that rested on the Branch in Isaiah 11 and the decree David heard in Psalm 110.
THE 7 SPIRITS OF THE LORD REST ON THE TRIBE OF HIS MOUTH
Isaiah 11:1–4 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. His delight is in the fear of the LORD, and He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears; but with righteousness He shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
Isaiah saw a Rod/Branch come forth from the stem of Jesse, a Branch growing from roots that, to every natural eye, looked as if they were finished. And the Spirit of the LORD rested on Him in a sevenfold fullness.
Count them: the Spirit of the LORD Himself, the Spirit of wisdom, the Spirit of understanding, the Spirit of counsel, the Spirit of might, the Spirit of knowledge, and the Spirit of the fear of the LORD. Seven spirits resting on one Branch. I don’t believe the sevenfold Spirit was ever meant to be reserved for the Head alone.
The Spirit that rested on Him is the same Spirit by which He baptizes into His Body. I believe that same anointing from Isaiah 11:2–4 is coming upon the corporate Christ, the Body, in these last days. A people walking in wisdom that isn’t natural intelligence, understanding that isn’t human insight, counsel that isn’t a strategy session, might that isn’t willpower, and knowledge that isn’t information, all of it resting on the seventh and governing spirit: the fear of the LORD.
THE GOVERNMENTAL BODY OF CHRIST
The fear of the LORD keeps Him from judging by what His eyes see or His ears hear. It means doing what God says, even when it doesn’t make sense, even when everything you can see and hear argues the opposite, and moving anyway because you are governed by every word that proceeds from His mouth. That is the entire difference between a judicial truth and an experiential truth.
We can say we are the church, the ekklesia, the governmental body of Christ, and judicially that is true. It is written into who we are. But experientially, most of us have never walked in it because we are not actually governed by His voice the way the Branch was. A people truly governed by every word from the Father’s mouth don’t just believe correct doctrine. They move differently. They speak differently. Their very life choices come from a different source than those of the people around them.
Jesus said it plainly about Himself, twice, once about what He did and once about what He said.
John 5:19 Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
John 12:49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.
GOVERNMENTAL SONS - GOVERNED BY EVERY WORD FROM FATHER'S MOUTH
Jesus was a governmental Son, who was governed by every word that came from the Father’s mouth in His actions and words alike. That is why a single word could cast out a demon, why a word to a storm could still it, and why a word to a fig tree could wither it from the root. The rod came from His mouth before it ever needed to reach His hand, and the Lord is raising up a people after that same pattern, a people whose authority doesn’t come from their own strategy or strength but from being governed by every word from the Father’s mouth; therefore, they can release the full authority of His government. Back to: if you desire to wield the sword of His mouth, you must yield to the sword of His mouth.
THE ROD SENT OUT OF ZION
David saw this centuries before it happened. He carried more than one open-heaven encounter, and this psalm records one of them.
Psalm 110:1 The LORD (Yahweh) said to my Lord (Adonai), “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
David watched His Adonai, Jesus, seated at Yahweh the Father's right hand. He heard the Father speak a decree over the Son before the Son came to earth to receive it.
Psalm 110:2 The LORD shall send (shalach) the rod (matteh) of Your strength out of Zion. Rule (radah) in the midst of Your enemies!
“Rule” is RADAH, the same Hebrew word used in Genesis 1:28 for the dominion given to mankind at creation, when God told the first Adam to have dominion, radah, over everything that moved on the earth. The last Adam is given that same word, radah, except this time the dominion is sent out from Zion and exercised in the midst of His enemies, not in their absence.
And “rod” is MATTEH. This single Hebrew word appears 251 times across the Old Testament, translated “tribe” 182 times, “rod” 52 times, and “staff” 15 times. The overwhelming majority of its uses in Scripture aren’t about a stick at all. They are about a tribe, because in Israel a matteh/rod and a tribe were used interchangeably. Every tribal leader, every prince of his father’s house, carried a literal rod that represented his tribe and his authority as its head.
That is exactly the picture behind Numbers 17, when the Lord had Moses take one matteh/rod from each of the twelve tribes, each inscribed with its leader’s name, and lay them before Him in the tabernacle overnight. Aaron’s matteh/rod was the one that budded, blossomed, and bore almonds, the same almond rod Jeremiah would see centuries later when the Lord asked him, “What do you see?” A rod was never just a
THE TRIBE OF HIS MOUTH
So when Psalm 110:2 says the Lord will send the matteh/rod of His strength out of Zion, and Isaiah 11:4 says; He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, I don’t believe we are meant to picture a single wooden staff. I believe we are meant to picture a tribe, a governed people, a company that bears His name, as the twelve mattot bore their fathers’ house names.
(Isaiah’s word for “rod” in that verse, SHEVET, is closely related to matteh rather than identical, but it carries the same double meaning of tribal identity and even a shepherd’s rod, all folded into one.) The Lord is not sending out a weapon. He is sending out a tribe, a people who bear His name, are called by His name, and walk in His name, able to move, strike, and govern because they belong to Him, inscribed, set apart, and stretched out from Zion into the earth. That is the tribe of His mouth: not a bloodline, not a denomination, but everyone whose life is governed by the word that comes from His mouth, carrying His authority, as a prince carried his tribe’s rod/matteh into battle.
Psalm 110:3 Your people will volunteer (ned’a’va) freely in the day of Your power; in holy array, from the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew.
“Volunteer” there is NED’A’VA, the same root behind the freewill offerings of the Old Testament, the ones nobody was commanded to bring and everybody brought anyway because they wanted to. That is this tribe’s defining mark. Nobody hires them and nobody has to threaten or guilt them into position. In the day of His power, they show up dressed for holiness, as many and as fresh as the dew that is new every morning, because that is simply who they are.
Psalm 110:4 The LORD has sworn and will not relent, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
And this tribe carries a priesthood that was never about Aaron’s bloodline, because it reaches back past Sinai to Salem, past the Levitical order to the order of Melchizedek, priest of God Most High and king of Zion before Israel ever existed as a nation. This is a priesthood of Zion, a priesthood of the King’s dominion: worship and authority fused into one office, which is exactly what I’ve been describing across this whole series as altars of the Voice.
This is a fullness-of-time moment. The Lord is raising up a people in the spirit of Isaiah 11, carrying the sevenfold Spirit, governed not by what they can see or hear but by the fear of the LORD and the word proceeding from His mouth. Not a lone rod planted on a mountain somewhere, but a tribe, sent out of Zion, inscribed with His name, ruling in the midst of our enemies through a body willing to be a living, freewill sacrifice.
DECLARATION
I declare that I am part of the tribe of His mouth, governed not by what my eyes see or my ears hear but by the word that proceeds from the Father, carrying the sevenfold Spirit that rested on the Branch and now rests on His Body. I am not a lone rod standing on a hill; I am inscribed into a tribe sent out of Zion to rule in the midst of my enemies, a freewill offering in the day of His power, a priest after the order that was never about bloodline. I yield my life, my choices, and the words of my own mouth to the One whose Voice I was created to release.
PRAYER
Father, let the fear of the LORD govern me the way it governed Your Son, so that I judge by Your word and not by what I can see or hear. Rest the sevenfold Spirit on me as fully as You rested it on the Branch, and inscribe me into the tribe You are sending out of Zion. Make me a willing offering, not a conscripted one, fresh as the dew in the day of Your power. Let the rod of my strength come from You alone, and let it be governed entirely by the words of Your mouth. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
QUESTION
If the Lord opened the books tonight and asked which tribe your life actually belongs to, the one governed by what you can see and hear, or the one governed by what proceeds from His mouth, which one would the evidence of your choices this week actually point to?
